St. Francis May Say 'Bye Bye Babies'

Posted on: 2007-09-04
East Memphis - The hospital denies it, but several sources in the medical community say St. Francis Hospital may soon stop delivering babies at it's Flagship East Memphis hospital.

We're told the OB unit at St. Francis Hospital brought 18-hundred babies into the world last year.

Next year, that number may be zero.

We're told the hospital made that announcement to its OB staff at a meeting on Monday.

Dr. ThomasStovall is an Obstetrician with an MBA, and says the proposed change is likely due to financial pressures. 'From an economic standpoint it's very difficult to have a low volume service with a very high cost associated with providing 24 hour care 7 days a week.' said Stovall

How much is St. Francis losing? Some estimates put it at more than 2 and a quarter million dollars last year, though some doctors say that figure is inflated.

A St. Francis spokeswoman says closing the OB unit is 'under consideration, that managers are evaluating it, and no decision has been made.

But other hospitals, like Methodist are aware of the buzz and have warned doctors, the shutdown, if it happens, could take months.

Such a move would also affect the residency program for student doctors studying family medicine.

St. Francis began its family medicine focus as part of its long-time affiliation with the Catholic Church. After the hospital's sale to the private, for profit, Tenet Healthcare Corporation, apparently some of the higher cost parts of that family medicine program have come under careful review.

And we're told that review said the number of patients who can't pay, namely Hispanics, are to blame. 'The Hispanic community will definitely be affected.' says Camilla Rodney of Medicos De La Familia says the hospital's Catholic name draws many Hispanics to St. Francis, which has a top notch staff.

'The nurses at St. Francis are very skilled. They can handle complications they have been there for 20 years and it's like a family up there.' said Rodney.

And the news gets worse. Those displaced patients would likely head to Baptist which may be able to take up some of the slack... and Methodist Germantown which definitely cannot. 'Well, there's already a traffic jam at Methodist Germantown and I think this will probably cause even more of a traffic jam.' Stovall explained.

This wouldn't be the first OB unit to shut down in Memphis. A few years ago, Methodist phased out it's birth center at it's medical center campus, and Baptist just plain left downtown, and we're told The Med often is too full to take new patients.

Neighborhood burglaries

Posted on: 2008-10-16
I wanted to alert neighbors to a number of home burglaries that have occurred in the 4700/4800/and 4900 blocks of our street ( Dee) and numerous others that run parallel to Dee ( Welchshire, etc.) The burglaries on our street seem to happen during the day. Several victims have been hit twice. Our neighbor was hit right after the Italian Festival in May, and again this morning. They had their security system on, and security doors locked. The burglars used an ax to break down their back security door. The alarm did not deter them. There were neighbors home all around-yet we did not see anything. Another lady stopped her car when she saw the Police and indicated that she has been hit twice in two weeks. Please let our neighborhood know that we are being targeted and need to be diligent for looking for cars that don't belong, etc. In May, they pulled up really far into the driveway and were in and out in no time-targeting electronics.

Yard Vandalism Alert

Posted on: 2008-08-08
On August 7, 2008 around 2:00 am a vehicle was spotted by our next door neighbor 'peeling out' in our front yard. It was too dark for our neighbor to determine exactly what type and color the vehicle was, but she thinks it appeared to be a Suburban or Tahoe, 1990's model. The vehicle missed my parked car by a few feet.

I have noticed many houses in our area have tire tracks in the front lawns (especially corner lots with no fence, like ours).

If you know anything or saw anything, your help would be appreciated.
